The number of apps designed specifically for iPads’ expanse of display real estate has now passed 100,000, Apple has revealed.
The iPad App Store passed the figure, which doesn’t include apps that will run on the tablets but weren’t expressly created with them in mind, this week. To put the number in some sort of perspective, back in March the total was just 65,000.

Cupertino’s announcement comes some 16 months after the first-gen Apple slate went on sale and is proof positive of the size of the challenge Android faces to get devs to jump ship.
At the last count, applications designed for tablets running Google’s OS numbered a relatively paltry 1,300-odd. Meanwhile, the number that have been optimised for the Honeycomb version of the Android slate operating system are estimated to be in the low hundreds.
Sales of Apple and Apple tablet computers reveal a similar disparity. Apple is aiming to ship eight million iPads this quarter to keep up with consumer demand. By contrast, the debut Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola Xoom, is estimated to have done a somewhat meagre figure of between 25,000 and 120,000 since launch
